VIOLIN MEETS JINGHU
GEOFFREY CASTLE + LUCY WU

Lucy Wu

Lucy Wu was born in Nanjing, China to a family of professional Chinese Opera musicians and actors. At age 12 she was selected from 10,000 applicants to the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, the highest educational institution for Chinese Opera.

Today Wu is one of the premier jinghu artists in the world. During her career with the Beijing Chinese Opera Wu worked with many of the greatest Chinese Opera masters and did numerous recordings with them.

From an early age Wu envisioned combining the traditional jinghu instrument with Western styles of music. The Chinese Ministry of Culture awarded her the "Young Outstanding Achievement Award" for a concert she created featuring jinghu with a Western pop-style band.

Since moving to the United States Wu has continued to pursue breaking down the barriers between the traditional jinghu and Western styles of music, creating a new, fresh sound appealing to audiences in the East and the West. Of note are numerous performances at Chinese New Year Festivals, the Microsoft Chinese New Year Gala, the Chicago Chinese Opera Tour by CCTV, the "Arts of China" show on CCTV and the Wu Xiao Mei Jinghu Concert Hong Kong tour.

Geoffrey Castle

Geoffrey Castle is a pioneer on the electric six-string rock violin. Whether on stage with members of YES, Heart, Queen, or in the Broadway production of M.Butterfly, or playing solo on stages across the US, Castle's showmanship and command of his instrument always leave audiences roaring their approval.

A theme of Castle's career is to change people's pre-conceived notions of what is possible on a violin, which he does every time he takes the stage. Classical? Celtic? Clapton? Sure!

A bandleader and solo artist, Geoffrey Castle's music been featured on radio and TV across the US, and his violin work has graced multiple movie and TV soundtracks. Castle's diverse appeal is reflected in the huge variety of formats that have featured him: NPR, Hard Rock, Country, and Smooth Jazz stations have all featured Castle's genre-defying fiddling.

Castle's Celtic Christmas and St. Patrick's Day concerts are highlights of the season and sell out in theaters around his home town of Seattle.

Education and Community Outreach are priorities for Castle, whose schedule includes performances and workshops at schools around the United States, inspiring children to dream big, and play music, and raising funds for their music programs.

It is clear from their individual biographies that both Lucy Wu and Geoffrey Castle are masters of their instruments as well as creative, innovative people who wish to go beyond traditional limits. They have been each pursuing musical innovation in their own way for years. In the summer of 2011 destiny brought them together to meet in person and an immediate connection was made: they had similar aspirations about crossing traditional boundaries and they both wanted to bring their sound to the other's culture.

Within three weeks of meeting Geoffrey asked Lucy to be a special guest at his concert at the prestigious Triple Door theater in downtown Seattle. They played several songs together which were enthusiastically welcomed by the audience. In the theater were five reporters from Chinese-language newspapers; articles were written in four different newspapers, all of them complimentary about the songs played and enthusiastic about the future of the collaboration.

January 2012 sees the duo playing a number of high profile Chinese New Year celebration events and the first staging of their full show at the Triple Door located in downtown Seattle on January 23rd. Further performances and tours are being planned: Castle and Wu are excited to bring their unique East-meets-West collaboration to audiences worldwide.
